Lawn Fertilization Programs
Get Started Early
For a lot of people, a green lawn is a happy lawn. But that isn’t necessarily the case. Warm temperatures bring stubborn crabgrass and other weeds that laid dormant in the soil over Winter. Don’t settle for weeds just because they’re green. With a few simple steps in Spring, you can have a happy green lawn.
Crabgrass and other weeds prefer a thin lawn where the sun can hit bare soil warming it up enough for weeds to germinate. To prevent this, start by fertilizing in the early spring. Choose a fertilizer that also has a weed preventer in it. For example, we carry Turf Line Turf Fertilizer Plus Crabgrass Preventer and Turf Line Weed Killer Plus Turf Fertilizer. Whatever you end up purchasing, read the instructions carefully. You will need to know the rate in which to spread it and how to spread it. Over Fertilizing can burn your lawn causing spots for weeds to grow. But don’t just fertilize in the Spring. You will need to do another application during the summer and into fall. This keeps your lawn healthy during the season and over the dormant Winter months.
Another way to prevent crabgrass and other weeds over the warmer months is as simple as maintaining your lawn. Weeds can’t grow if the lawn is full and healthy. Don’t cut your lawn short. This allows the sun to warm up the soil and germinate those pesky crabgrass seeds. Keeping your lawn at a slightly longer length keeps the sun from reaching the soil and it keeps the grass roots long and full which means no room for weeds. Once the threat of frost is over, go to your local garden center and pick up some grass seed. Apply grass seed to any bare spots before crabgrass has a chance to take over. We carry grass seed for all types of conditions such as full sun, shade, and drought. Keep your grass seed from drying out for optimum germination. We carry a seed aid that holds moisture in between watering to keep the seeds from drying out but you can also use other methods such as hay or burlap. Watering is also necessary for a healthy lawn. Watering deeply and infrequently keeps lawns green and full and prevents crabgrass from taking hold.
