FALL PLANTING
Fall is a great time to evaluate your outdoor areas and see what additional plants you might like to add. It's a time to tackle new projects, such as adding new plant beds or renovating your current landscaping. Plants added in the fall have a great jump start for the following spring. With the temperature starting to cool down and the plants getting ready for the cooler season ahead, they start to go dormant (going to sleep for the winter).  So installing plants and shrubs now means, less "shock" ( when roots are disturbed when plants is pushing out leaves or flowers. This can cause plants to wilted or loose some leaves/flowers). Also fall plants will use there energy to root and grow during this time. So come spring they are ready to show.

Many people ask about planting now and think there is not enough time for the plant to root before winter hits. With the winters here in Buffalo, NY you never know what will happen. Yes some plants many not pull threw, but most will. All of our trees in root balls come in during the fall season to be "put to sleep" at our nurseries for the winter. This way, come spring they are acclimated to the weather and ready to shine.
So if you have outdoor garden that you did not complete over the summer and think you have to wait until spring again, YOU DON'T. Get your yard finished now so come the spring you can sit back and enjoy it. As always here at Lincoln Park Nursery we have a design staff and professional landscape crew that can help you get projects done. Big or small, we can installed it. For those who just need a little help on what to pick out for there yard. Stop into our Garden Centers and ask one of our knowledgeable staff.

Fall Clean Ups

                                   FALL CLEAN-UPS!!!!!

As the sunset is coming earlier, and the nights are becoming cooler. The signs of fall are knocking on our doorstep. You might be thinking that it's to late to finish up those projects in your yard that you did not have time to do.  Well good news, IT'S NOT.
Fall is a great time to plant, clean up your beds, trim and even mulch your beds. If fact fertilizing and mulching your beds before the winter helps protect your plants and also gives them nutrients over those cold months.  Laying down a slow feed granular fertilizer will help feed your plants over the winter as well as give them a nice boost when the spring days start to return.
Mulch is made from organic materials such as wood chips, peat moss, or bark chips. It helps to prevent soil erosion which depletes vital nutrients that helps plants grow. Also as mulch breaks down, it provides much-needed nutrients for the soil which in turn helps your garden grow.  Mulch helps to  slow down evaporation too. Yes even over those winter months, when we do not have 3' Feet of snow on the ground. The winter sun can still dry out the soil causing plants and there root systems to suffer from moisture stress. Mulch provides a barrier to prevent the sun from reaching the soil which minimizes evaporation.
So if you still have gardening to complete it is not to late.  Now with the cooler temps, it is a great time to get outside and finish up your yard.
As always if you need a helping hand with your yard give Lincoln Park Nursery a call 716-692-6100. We offer Fall Clean ups and Landscaping.

PLANTING DURING THE SUMMER

Summertime Planting.....Absolutely

People always seem to ask me " is it safe to plant now". My answer is absolutely. Planting during the summertime here in buffalo is just as OK as planting during the spring or fall. People count on the spring and fall to be cooler and have more rain so they can water less. Well as we know, that is not the case here. Any new installations need to be watered two to three times a week unless we get an 1" or more of rain. It takes two to three years for plants to establish a root system good enough to support them without a lot of watering. Fertilizing your new shrubs and trees will also help stimulate root growth.
So regardless if you plant in the spring, summer or fall, your new installations will require the same amount of care during hot periods. Lets face it, We all are busy and sometimes there is just not enough time during the spring to get everything we wanted done. So don't think you have to wait till fall or next spring. Now is still a great time to plant and get your yard into shape for you and your family to enjoy.

There is still a great selection of trees and shrubs to choice from. If you have questions we are here to help. So come on in and see us here at Lincoln Park Nursery..

Gearing Up For Spring

Springs Ahead!!!

As winters grip starts to let go there in WNY, many of you will catch the annual spring fever bug. Here are a handful of helpful garden tips.

Clean up your lawn & gardens: Any leaves, broken branches & debris should be raked up, removed & recycled. Clean up of lawns and beds will help prevent disease problems & ass curb appeal.

Identify & Apply: Very important that crabgrass control & turf food be applied in early spring (march-April). Undesirable crabgrass & weed seed can remain viable in the soil for 3 years. A pre-emergence application "prevents" undesirables from germinating. "Turf Line" 4 step solutions are effective & available at out garden centers.  We also offer a lawn fertilization program which is applied by our certified applicators. Give our office a call.

A Time to Trim: Get educated on when, how & what to trim. A general trim of "at least" once every growing season is recommended. Often older plants become woody & unproductive. Bring in a photo or cutting to our garden center if you are unsure, for the right solutions.

Preen, Fertilize, Mulching: After cleaning, weeding & trimming, spring is a great time to keep your garden happy! Apply preen "pre-emergence" to help prevent new weeds from growing. Granular organic fertilizers are slow release and safe to use. Mulches come in a variety of choices and colors. They hold moisture, add soil texture & a finished look to the garden. All this is available in containers, bags or bulk at out garden centers.

Pest Control: A nice selection of safe weed & animal controls are flooding the market these days. Tell us about your problems, bring in a cutting, or photo to us. Let us help you get the best solution on what's Bugging you!
